Contests & E-newsletter

E-newsletter

I send a periodic newsletter--only 3 to 4 issues a year, so no need to worry about a mailbox full of spam--keeping people up-to-date on what's going on with my work. And to make it worth my subscribers' time and effort, I run contests with prizes specially chosen to make booklovers happy.

Important note: Because my service provider is dedicated to preventing spam, you will receive an e-mail from my address asking you to click on a link to confirm your subscription. If you do not do this, you will not be subscribed or entered in the contest, and the spam police will not let me remind you. (How do the professional spammers manage to send me a hundred messages a day, I want to know.) Sigh.

Back to the good stuff. All my e-newsletter subscribers are automatically entered in any contest I run, for as long as they stay subscribed. There's no rule against repeat winners, so there's no telling what you could win!

New Contest

The prize for my next contest is an old favorite--get a character named after you! I'm currently working on the fifth Faye Longchamp mystery, and I'm naming people left and right. Maybe one of them will have your name...but be aware that I don't promise that you'll be a nice person, nor that you'll even stay alive. I have "killed" a contest winner in the past. Well, I killed a couple of them, actually. Enter at your own risk...

Winner of Contest # ??

Somehow, the last few contests and winners have vanished from my site. I blame the electronic equivalent of termites. So trust me when I say that several books have gone out since Contest #12--Copies of Artifacts, Relics, one of my friend Jane Finnis' books, and probably others. So I'm not numbering my contests any more, because it just wouldn't make any sense. Anyway. My next book, Findings, can be read as a stand-alone, without having read the first three books. However, I think there are nuances that longtime readers will especially enjoy. So I'm giving away copies of my three existing books as a buildup to the release of Findings on July 10. This month's winner wins the last of those three books, Effigies.

And the winner is...Lisa Richardson!

What's the next contest? The winner of the next contest will receive a copy of Effigies. I'm looking forward to getting a copy in my hands, so maybe some of you are...

Winner of Contest #11

Sharon Greer is the winner of Rhys Bowen's new Evan Evans book, Evanly Bodies. Since her protagonist and I are evidently cousins, it just seemed like the right thing to do...

Seriously, Rhys has won and been nominated for virtually every major mystery award, and her experience and professionalism show in her books. I think Sharon will enjoy this one.

Winner of Contest #10

Beth Slater won everybody's favorite prize, her name in the next book. Notice that I didn't promise to make her a nice person. Nor did I guarantee that she would survive to the end of the book...heh, heh, heh.

Winner of Contest #9

Chris Wallace won a copy of One for Sorrow, the first John the Eunuch mystery by Mary Reed and Eric Mayer. It has a gorgeous, rich setting in 4th-century Constantinople, and I adore reading books that take me someplace I've never been.

Winner of Contest # 9

I've given up announcing when the contests open and close, because my schedule is so frenetic that I just wind up sending out newsletters three or so times a year, whenever I get home. Anyway, Bruce Lutz won a first-edition copy of Relics, but I didn't get a response to my e-mail telling him so. If anybody knows Bruce, drop me a line!

Winner of Contest # 8

Carroll Johnson won the coolest prize I can give: a character named after them. So there will be a Carroll in Effigies. As a writer, I'm very taken by Carroll's name, since the spelling makes it visually memorable, and since it could fit a male or a female character. As always, I don't promise that the character will be a goody-two-shoes...

Congratulations to Carroll!

Winner of Contest #7

Fred Yoder won Contest #7, which closed on May 15, 2005. He received a copy of Silver Lies by Ann Parker, and I hope he enjoyed it as much as I did.

Winner of Contest #6:

Contest # 6 closed on November 15, 2004. Brenda Sabin won a copy of Judy Clemens' When the Cows Come Home by Judy Clemens. I recently read this book and just loved it, so I decided to use the current contest as my own version of Oprah's book club. Judy has created a real, likeable character in Stella Crown. She's a dairy farmer, a Harley rider, and a strong and independent woman. I think you'll like Cows as much as I did.

Winner of Contest # 5:

Contest # 5 closed on July 15, 2004. The winner was Louise Dietz. She will receive her choice of any paperback book in the Poisoned Pen Press catalog.

Winner of Contest #4:

Contest #4 closed on April 15, 2004. There were three winners: Rashmi (no last name yet), Wendy Lee, and Shirley D. Reynolds. Each winner will receive a copy of the new iBooks/Simon&Schuster mass-market paperback edition of Artifacts.

Winner of Contest #3:

Contest #3 closed on February 10, 2004. Kathy Pierce was the winner. Kathy received the softcover book of her choice from Poisoned Pen Press.

Winner of Contest #2:

Contest #2 closed on September 10, 2003. Jenny Hanahan was the winner. Relics will feature a character named after Jenny!

Winner of Contest #1:

The pre-publication contest closed on May 10, 2003. Owene Lewis was the lucky winner of a free copy of Artifacts

This is a series that deserves more attention than it garners

Library Journal (Starred review)

Effigies

A captivating combination of archeology, Native-American tales, romance and detection. A must-read.

Relics

An intriguing, multi-layered tale. Not only was I completely stumped by the mystery, I was enchanted by the characters Evans created with such respect.

Artifacts

…a tantalizing mystery.

Merry Band of Murderers

...A Merry Band of Murderers is a winner....Three [stories] are particularly noteworthy: Mary Anna Evans' Land of the Flowers, Jeffrey Deaver's The Fan, and Val McDermid's Long Black Veil....
